Can We Finally Kill The Welfare Queen? Commentary on the Economy and Budget Strife

I haven't written about economic conditions yet here because I feel that it's beyond me(I'm no Paul Krugman although his Conscience of A Liberal changed my life.) I'm just a citizen of a nation who seems to have never been fully sure that I existed, and I have spent my life, from early childhood in the Reagan years, and been reminded of this fact. Mom used to drag me to school board meetings.
I missed completely what some people seem to view as some golden age of Clinton prosperity, but I don't really write this out of personal bitterness(although college might have been different if I had known that Uncle Sam would wave the cookie plate in front of my face and jerk it away before I'd selected my own personal nummy treat)
But I'm tired. Tired of social services always being first on the chopping block while bankers and stockbrokers barely have to break stride. Tired of having to claim victory because we "only" lost a percentage of what we fought for. Tired of human-interest standing in for real debate. Yes, I want things for cute crippled kids, but we do grow up, and we need a solid future. Tired of aid to businesses being considered right and proper...it may well be, I didn't write this post to debate that; I'd just like some of the same consideration for my needs and for those of my sisters and brothers. I have begun to think of AIG as "And It's Gone," though. Tired of watching budget proposals getting less and less humane.
I was right there with the leader of the UAW when he complained about the double standard being accorded his people versus Wall Street types. However, there may be a third "crippled person" standard. As heartwrenching as the concessions the union had to take might have been, I don't recall anyone suggesting pass a drug test before the auto firms got any money. This is debated routinely for welfare recipients, even in circles I used to think of as progressive."Those People" sure like to get high, although just what about living on a pittance, being stigmatized, and so forth have in them to tempt someone toward sobriety and industry is material for another post.
And when I see how easily those bankers skate when I consider that when I lived in supported housing and bounced a check years ago and had to "earn" my right to still carry a personal checkbook, those fancy bathrooms get me mad all over again. Just who in this scenario really needed a behavior plan?
If there is a silver lining for PWD like me in the troubled times, may I suggest that receiving aid from the government be destigmatized? Ronald Reagan's fairy story of the woman using tens of welfare checks to lord it over the 'hood in a Cadillac has been debunked for over twenty years...this may sound awful, and maybe I'm carrying my mother's grudge here, but I would have been thrilled to read that Nancy had trouble finding attendants to wipe Ronnie's befuddled ass. In a sick sort of way, that bit of justice might have made me a Christian, if not a role-model one, for wanting to turn the wrong cheeks.
But I have to be as good as a stockbroker, right? Even though I have dyscalculia and count on my fingers sometimes, and my response to that kind of pressure might involve singing Jimmy Buffett's "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?'at volumes that would even get noticed at the stock exchange...they say I'm a snow queen, but I don't think it's true.
